The Green Tiny House

[ A TINY URBAN GARDEN | a public exhibition ]

The tiny urban garden is a garden is a part od my Tiny House project and began with a small area near the Reinbeckhallen in Berlin Schöneweide. When I started with few plants and showed the first water installations, many visitors liked this exhibition concept, so that I will continue sustainability and autarky not only thematically, but also further develop on a bigger area.

The year 2019 announces itself in Berlin as the Humboldt year. For many years numerous and elaborate rebuilding works in Berlin Mitte towards the opening of the Humboldt Forum in 2019 which will contain extensive ethnological collections. His eponym Alexander von Humboldt was born 250 years ago in Berlin Tegel and worked his life long as a prominent botanist, researcher and adventurer who didn’t become tired to publish his extensive knowledge in numerous books and to share into lectures or in salons with his listeners.

As a natural scientist Humboldt was on the move above all in South America and showed with his “Naturgemälde” and other designs the big connections and context between the elements of the nature, pointed to environmental damage which originates from deforestation and environmental pollutions and outlined in numerous papers the interrelations between life and climate.

Without the element water these interrelations and the life even are hardly possible. Any physical state and contained material compositions from and in the water work in the most different way in the life and are a part of a complicated circulation. Water forms a unity with his environment, is a raw material and element, engine and means of transportation. Without water there is no life.

The nature has developed in millions of years her natural laws with which the elements have a connection with each other in a balanced harmony and mutual influencing. The exact consideration, the recognition of the system and the adaptation on the everyday life give us the balance with the nature which allows a sustainable future.

The disturbance of the balance and the results appeared in the drought summer 2018 in the water recycling installation of my project by which the recycling with sewage plants came to its borders. The plants need themselves water and together with the high vaporisation by the persistent heat they used the scarcely available water. I had to add daily several litres of water and hardly had by the plants cleaned water. In winter the microorganisms in the root areas stopped their work by 8°C and the water freezes on the surface by which in the cold season also the quantity of water usable again is low.

At this example appears how strong the interrelations propagated by Humboldt are and what can cause their disregard. For the successful self-sufficient water recycling with natural materials must solutions be conceived and set up which consider the varying environmental conditions and seasons and work according to their legitimacies. The inclusion of weather conditions, temperatures, biological, chemical and physical laws becomes the advantage of a concept, because it integrates the elements and does not work against them.

The “idea of Humboldt” of an uniform, general natural concept which follows independent of the place always the same legitimacies has inspired me together with the knowledge from 2018 to follow this idea and to let flow own considerations into my work in the area of the sustainable water recycling. Sustainable water recycling and water production for self-sufficient small units in harmony with the environment is more than the use of sustainable materials like plants. It’s the work with precipitation, temperature, the sun, cold, physical forces and biological qualities. It’s the attention of interrelations between plants and their environment and above all it’s the recognition of the nature in the change of the time.

The simultaneous greatest possible sacrifice of harmful materials like plastic fits together with a natural concept to a ZERO WASTE SPACE which can show how a future can look for our next generation. Now in the new location in Berlin Marzahn I have a area at hand on which sustainable ideas get a bigger space. Directly beside an artist’s studio, the Altes Kesselhaus Marzahn, originates an urbane garden which accommodates my sustainable “low waste” water recycling installations and shows other concepts which allow a life without plastic garbage.

[ THE CONSTRUCTION | space in an urban garden ]

On a 150qm area I build a urban garden with raised beds, a food forrest and zero waste installations. It’s a melange of sustainable concepts which can integrate in a climate friendly lifestyle. I use raised beds where I can’t grow plants in the soil. In the area with the trees I integrate plants based on the model of a food forrest. Zero Waste Installations complete the garden with ideas avoid pollutions and waste, use upcycling and recycling and install circular concepts. This is not about abandonment. Its about the best in less.

[ FOOD FOREST | Waldgarten ]

Permakultur is a creative design approach which reacts to a world of evanescent energy and resources availability

For the composition of the “green garden” I use ideas which are based on sustainable concepts and follow a comprehensive approach. The integration of the environment, the conditions, living beings, physical, biological and chemical laws and the needs of the humans are form-giving elements which find themselves in the Permakultur. Permakultur is a conscious design which applies different principles and leads to resistant and sustainable systems.

I use the combination of a forest garden with the design of urbane raised beds, because on the one hand the ground space isn’t suitable and there are on the other hand trees which should be integrated into the garden. The different vertical levels like crown roof / tall growing trees, half and low trunks, shrub layer, vegetable layer and herbal layer and vertical layer of climbing plants are implement in different arrangements partially in raised beds.

[ ZERO WASTE SPACE | ideas in an urban garden ]

An urban garden in the middle of Berlin is for me a big heart project which gives my need for a green space the shape and embeds at the same time my ideas in a green exhibition frame full of plants. An urban garden in a big town like Berlin is a green oasis which designs beside garden with many plants also metaphorically a green space for the purposes of a sustainable strategy.

In the urban garden I create a space for a break for my visitors. If you can make a short break between a pleasant smell of flowers you can come down and enjoy the atmosphere. The high speed of life disappears and you have the room to see the details, the plants, the inspiration and the possibilities.

[ THE BEGINNING | a tiny garden ]

In Berlin Schöneweide | Reinbeckhallen I started to transform old concepts and methods for water recycling in practical system installations which include the methods artistically and utilise the use of water in the everyday life as a holistical circulatory system. In the garden beside my Tiny House I exhibited the system installations.
